Introducing Athena

Athena is a gifted neurodivergent child living in a world that doesn't always understand her. Loud noises, scratchy clothes, unfamiliar foods, and unexpected changes can quickly become overwhelming. At home, her mom has created a place where Athena feels safe and accepted. But at school, things are much harder. Teachers often misunderstand her behavior, classmates see only her differences, and every new school year brings fresh challenges.

Thankfully, Athena doesn't have to face them alone. With her loyal best friend, Shirley, by her side, she finds the courage to keep going, even when the world feels too big.

When Athena finally meets other kids who think and experience life like she does, everything begins to change. She discovers that being neurodivergent isn't something to hide—it's part of what makes her extraordinary. As she learns to embrace her strengths, speak up for her needs, and believe in herself, Athena finally finds where she belongs.

Verna E. Hiser

Thank you for taking the time to visit Neurodiverse Journey. I am excited to be on this journey with you. I am passionate about helping neurodivergent and twice-exceptional learners discover their strengths, build confidence, and thrive. Through literature, executive function coaching, and educational resources, my goal is to help children, families, and educators better understand the unique ways neurodivergent minds experience the world.

I believe neurodiversity is not something to be fixed—it's a journey to be understood. Like any journey, it comes with unexpected detours, challenges, and incredible discoveries. With the right tools, practical strategies, supportive relationships, and plenty of grace, every learner can develop the skills and confidence they need to navigate life in a way that honors who they are.

My middle-grade book was inspired by the experiences of neurodivergent learners who often feel misunderstood in a world designed for neurotypical minds. Through relatable characters and hopeful storytelling, I hope every child sees that their differences are not weaknesses but valuable strengths, and that they deserve to be accepted, understood, and celebrated.

As an executive function coach, I work alongside learners and their families to develop practical strategies for organization, planning, emotional regulation, self-advocacy, and independence. My coaching is strengths-based, individualized, and rooted in the belief that meaningful growth happens when we understand the "why" behind challenges rather than trying to change who a person is.

Whether you're here to explore my book, find practical resources, or connect through coaching, I'm glad you've found your way to Neurodiverse Journey. I hope you'll join me in celebrating the many paths neurodivergent learners take as they discover their strengths and build lives filled with confidence, belonging, and possibility.
